Monday. Day after Sundae.

Experienced a little Mondayitis today? Surely a banana split sundae will make you smile!

A few years back, in our period of undefined, Mondays were actually a day to look forward to. S* and I called it Monday-hang-time. We were getting to know each other, not quite at the stage of definites, a few maybes and certainly a lot of we’ll-sees. There was a heap of witty banter, noticeable quirks and comfort in knowing that I was his sanctuary claiming that we were the only two sane people in this crazy world. A day where some of the best benching wind down hang-times took place, numerous ice-cold winter nights and the evolution of a game called chicken.

It got quite late in one of our hang-time specials, chatting away on a park bench, we realised that we had neglected to feed ourselves. For some reason, we always felt like pizza back then. Grinning deviously, we  made the call. To pizza hut. Around 10pm. We hoped that they would deliver a pepperoni pizza to us on a bench in Hyde Park. But they didn’t. Fair enough though. They probably thought that we were a couple of pranksters. I can’t remember what we ended up eating that night? Maybe Maccas. Well, only good came from this Pizza Hut pepperoni denied situation. We stumbled upon many restaurants, reading up on reviews and actually having a lot of fun finding new places to try together!

Well, whatever it was about your day today; perhaps it was just a regular day at work for the worker drone who craves some excitement, the pile of paper sitting on your desk that made you feel a little surly, the guy who sits across from you who devours his apple in a discordant slurp, the boss who’s PMS’ing and took it out on you or just the gloom that Autumn brought - I invite you to celebrate Monday with me with my banana split sundae!

Mondayitis? I prescribe a Sundae. Use it to brighten up any day!

Tell me dear reader, what is your remedy for Mondayitis?

What’s in my Banana Split Sundae?
One big portion that can be shared(?)** between two.

  • ~70g Dark Callebaut Chocolate (I usually use milk chocolate. For some reason I reached for the dark today. It was a little too intense)
  • 3 tbs of double cream
  • vanilla ice cream
  • 1 banana
  • peanuts

**(?) Only if you would like to share it.

Chocolate Sauce

  1. Chop up chocolate into small chunks
  2. Heat the cream. On the stove in a saucepan or in the microwave. Careful. Don’t overheat.
  3. Add chocolate to heated cream and stir till chocolate is melted. Look out for a velvet like consistency.

Alternatively, you can purchase your favourite chocolate topping from the supermarket.

Assembling the banana split sundae

  1. Add a good dollop of your warm chocolate sauce to the bottom of the bowl
  2. Slice/ split banana and place it on top of the chocolate sauce
  3. Add a generous serving of your favourite vanilla ice cream
  4. Slather with chocolate sauce
  5. Crush a handful of peanuts and sprinkle on top of sauce
  6. Best had in your PJs, on the couch, under a doona with your favourite TV program

Enjoy. Happy Monday!

    • I tried banoffee pie for the first time at Cafe Sopra a few weeks back! It was super! Tell me, is it coffee or toffee?

      • Toffee! Or more accurately, caramel/dulce de leche. Banana splits and banoffee pies are two of the few ways I’ll actually eat banana in a dessert.

  2. Hehe great idea to make Monday into an event to look forward to! :D

  3. What a clever idea. I tend to bake desserts on Sundays, but I love the idea of making Monday a special dessert day.
I usually cure Mondayitis with a glass or two of wine. I have found that the same treatment works well for Tuesdayitis, Wednesdayitis…..

  8. Wowsers, this looks fantabulous. Although only using a couple of tbsps of cream would justify using it for a whole world of desserts….not that it’s a bad thing!

Banana splits are one of my most favourite desserts. What a good reminder!

  9. Hi mademoiselle délicieuse – I always assumed it was coffee until I tried it! Definitely toffee!
